Like the title suggests this is an approximate and somewhat rambling attempt to summarise the history of a country into vague, and arguably limiting, time periods. There has been a rich amount of research done in this region but much, much more is needed. Since Pakistan's archaeology and history is of more concern here, this chronology does not take into account other regions in South Asia such as modern India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. At some point perhaps I can cover those areas more effectively. However for the sake of my own sanity I've kept it simple.

The research covering early prehistoric is sporadic due to the lack of funding, political and environmental difficulties of regions. However what research there is shows a rich stone tool making industry. Flint nodules, debitage and flakes. One of the richest areas, and most researched, is the Soan Valley. The 'proto-Indus' site of Mehrgarh also introduced settled occupation and the beginnings of what would later be the Indus Valley Civilisation.

The Indus Valley Civilisation, along with Pharonic Egypt and Mesopotamia, has been called the 'Cradle of Civilisation'. It was so called because it followed the path of the Indus and Saraswati rivers on the north-western side of the Indian Subcontinent. It was the first known urban settlement in this region and also the first evidence of writing. Some of the best known artefacts of this period include steatite seals and a bust of the so called 'Priest King' found at the famed site Mohenjo-Daro, in Sindh.
